Learning and Development
Our ambition is to become an organisation where learning is an integral part of the way we work every day - and through this to ensure that our people perform to their highest ability, while developing their careers as far as their ambitions take them.
In Our Contract with the People, we describe our commitment to employee learning and development as providing '...a comprehensive employee development scheme that includes management and professional qualifications'. This is reinforced by a clear People Strategy and supporting Learning at Work Policy.
The Council is committed to gaining the Investors in People award corporately, and we are on track with several teams already achieving this – a clear indication of our determination to be a ‘learning organisation’.
We want, and need, all of our people to perform at the highest possible level, and that means providing all of the targeted development opportunities we can. We're developing competency frameworks that underpin many of our roles to provide the relevant context for each employee's development.
As a member of one of our teams, you’ll have regular Employee Development and Review meetings with your manager to discuss and agree your development needs - and these contribute towards your Personal Development Plan.
You can learn in a variety of ways:
- Using our state-of-the art learning centre where we provide an ongoing programme of tutor-led events
- Through informal ‘lunch & learn’ sessions on popular topics
- Using our ‘Learning Café’s equipped with learning resources
- Through a large range of flexible online learning programmes available at your PC, in our Learning Cafés or at home.
- Through our learning support, consultancy and facilitation services
- All these enabling you to learn at your own pace, at the right time and in ways that suit you.
