Vicky Hughes
Countryside Ranger
When people ask me where my ideal holiday would be, I tell them I’d love to go to a part of Russia called Kamtchatka to see the native bears. I’ve always been interested in nature and the countryside and love working
outdoors. In fact, I’d love to set up an animal sanctuary rehabilitating wildlife and abused animals.
Joining East Lothian Council gave me the chance to combine what I love with a secure job — I worked for two summers as a seasonal countryside ranger, and then joined permanently as a countryside ranger in 1998. I immediately
liked working with the council — and my family were pleased I’d found a job I enjoyed and felt that the council was a good employer. Having my personal interests so closely tied with my career allows me to offer specialist
experience and knowledge — and in return, I get security with a good pension scheme, and lots of lifestyle support such as blood pressure checks, and healthy living advice. So it’s win, win, win.
