Coming together

We could go on and on about how good it is to work here. Or we could let our people tell you firsthand.

Alex Finlay
Manager, Facilities Services

I’ve always been interested in food – in fact, I’d love to be a restaurant critic. When I was younger, it was all about the glamour and fast pace of hotels and restaurants – I even studied Hospitality. Of course, I quickly learned there’s not much glamour in the hotel trade. That’s not to say Facilities Management is glitzy either. But I enjoy managing people – and I still get to talk about food all day. But really, East Lothian Council offered me responsibility, a good salary and great terms and conditions. The job here was pretty different to the one I left – I’ll admit to feeling a little daunted. But all my colleagues were very supportive and helpful. The council’s quite small. But that’s a tremendous positive for me – I got to know people and settled in quickly.

To sum up my work it’s varied and lots of fun. I have a lot of management experience, and the support of my department in my continuing professional development has been invaluable and as a consequence I now hold a Masters in Business Administration. I work with some great people – but most importantly, flexible working lets me spend more time with my family.
